On 7-8 April 2025, the National Erasmus+ Office in Kazakhstan (NEO KZ) and the National Team of Higher Education Reform Experts (HERE) took part in a two-day online SPHERE workshop “Artificial Intelligence: What institutions have to teach, and students have to learn for career and citizenship". During the session “Experiences with AI in HERE countries”, Gulzhan Jarassova, member of the National Team of Higher Education Reform Experts, made a presentation on “Artificial Intelligence in Universities of Kazakhstan: the Real Picture”, presenting the current situation, examples and challenges of implementing AI in the higher education system of Kazakhstan.

The workshop was very useful and included discussion of the following issues:

  • identifying the opportunities and risks of using AI for higher education institutions;
  • developing key policy recommendations for integrating AI into education;
  • sharing institutional strategies for implementing AI;
  • addressing issues of ethics, bias and governance of AI in higher education and in other areas, including medicine.
